Test Film Analysis

One of the main things we will change on our test film is that we are no longer going to do a split screen. This is because after the test shoot we found that having a split screen was far too confusing for the viewer. Therefore we are going to play the first "dream" sequence as an actual dream the boy is having. We will then show the boy waking up and having him think that everything he does in the dream he can do in reality. When in actual fact as the story unravels we see that he cant fulfil this and everything he tries to do is just embarrassing him and failing.

Test Filming

We carried out a test filming to get an idea of what shots will work together well when it comes to our final filming and editing. I will next produce a post on how we are going to change certain aspects of the film to make it much easier for the audience to understand. This has also be posted on our Walking Frame Productions Blogger and Facebook group.

Storyboard analysis

We created a storyboard so that we were aware of what shots to carry out and when. This made filming a lot simpler and ensured that all our shots flowed smoothly. We used this storyboard to create a test film to then develop so that out final project works as best as possible.

Summarised Audience Theory

There are some important aspects of audience theory that we must take into account when creating our short film.

Income Bracket - Our target audience income bracket is based around the late teenage years so this means they still live at home with their parents and are going through the typical teenage problems. In our short film we will therefore have to make sure that we don't portray a Young character that owns his own house and has a lot of money as this will make it impossible for our target audience to relate to.

Age - We are basing our short film around the ages of 16-18, this is a very small age bracket however there is a lot of room for developing the character. We believe this will be a successful age range to focus on as it is the one we are most familiar with. It will also mean that we will be able to determine to type of general mis-en-scene that would be expected in this age group. For example the types of clothes our character will be wearing must be appropriate.

Gender - We haven't got a main gender focus for our short film as it involves both a boy and girl however i believe that boys will be able to relate to it a lot more as it is the boy that is having all the girl problems. Therefore we will have to make sure that this is portrayed correctly and not so wrong that it takes away any social realism.

Race - Our short film will mostly appeal to British teenagers both characters are white and British and will therefore relate a lot more to their cultures. However although there are no specific elements that means any other race will not enjoy it we also haven't included any particular social realism's to their culture.

Location of Potential Audiences - Due to that fact that we are filming and both are characters are from Bristol this will mean that our potential audience will mainly be based in Bristol. However the only relevance our short Film will have to Bristol itself is the location and characters so we haven't restricted our audience too much.

Location Shoot

I took some pictures of the locations that we will be shooting to ensure that when it comes to filming we take proper care and consideration into which shots we will use. This will also allow us to be able to look at the types of lighting will be available and when, and also what equipment we will need when it comes to the day of starting our final film footage.

Genre Theory

Is it timeless?
- No its open to historical change and historical constructs.

John Fiske
"Any one programme will bear the main characteristic of its genre: But is likely to include some from others. Ascribing is to one genre or another involves deciding which set of characteristics are most important"

Richard Maltby and Ian Craven
"The success of Hollywood is reliant on the combination of predictable elements with variation"

Auters and Iconography
Auters- a group of film makers that were considered to be particularly influential and artistic.

Edward Buscombe
"Felt that iconography was the best way to achieve generic definitions"

Rick Altman
" - Genre theory presumes that viewers pre read texts
- Viewers become passive voyeurs
- Genre will therefore be restrictive
- Does not acknowledge or allow for the hybrid (blending of genres)"

By understanding the different genre theory's it will ensure that we think about the correct methods to ensure that our genre is put across as best as it possibly can. However we also don't want to fall into the trap of giving people a presupposed idea of what our short film will be about before they have watched it.
